Digital infrared imaging scans show the function, the physiology and the metabolism of breast tissue. It gives a picture of the functional activity in breast tissue. Usually abnormal cells are hotter because a malignant tissue mass is greedy. To feed
their rapid growth, they produce a chemical that makes new blood vessels
grow. This is called angiogenesis (“angio” means blood vessel / “genesis” means creation). A digital infrared imaging scan shows the heat difference between normal breast tissue and problem areas.

YET ANOTHER LABELLING LIE: So, as most of you know, I recommend eating
as natural and plain as possible. And, when you can’t afford the health food store option, or can’t get to a specialty store, do your best in the regular grocery store. BUT, that’s hard to do when we keep getting lied to.

Latest uncovered lie? “Natural” lunch meat. No preservatives, no additives, no nitrates
or nitrites. Sounds pretty good. But, they do not tell you that the wonderfully natural sounding ingredient named “cultured celery extract” is a preserving agent that contains nitrates and nitrites. Once again, LIED TO! And labels are allowed to be deceiving unless
the company decides to be ethical and honest.

Be careful where you shop, and be careful what you eat!! Trust your food and supplement providers.

PFCs from Non-stick Pans and Food Containers Could Make Vaccines Less Effective (STUDY)

By Lylah M. Alphonse | Shine from Yahoo! Canada – Tue, 31 Jan, 2012 3:01 PM EST

PFCs may make certain vaccines less effective. Is your child at risk? Certain vaccines may be much less effective for kids who have been exposed to high levels of perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), a group of chemicals used to make materials stain-, water-, wrinkle- and flame-resistant, a new study shows.

Given that the chemicals are found in many common household goods — including pizza boxes, carpets, and non-stick pans — more children than expected may be at risk.

The study, which was published last week in the Journal of the American Medical Association, found that children with high amounts of PFCs in their bloodstreams produced fewer antibodies after receiving vaccines for Diphtheria and Tetanus — so few that they could be at risk for getting those diseases, in spite of the vaccinations.

”When the PFC concentration increases in the body, the immune system gets more sluggish and is less capable of maintaining a defense mechanism against microorganisms,” the study’s lead researcher, Dr. Philippe Grandjean of the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, told Reuters.

PFCs cause reproductive and developmental problems in laboratory animals, the EPA says, but have not officially been found to be toxic to humans. Small amounts of PFCs can be found in everything from food containers and microwave popcorn bags to paints, pesticides, and flame-retardant clothing; Stainmaster, Teflon, and Scotchguard are some well-known brands containing PFCs. But much larger amounts of PFCs are produced when non-stick and stain-repellent products are manufactured and they often end up contaminating the ground and water supplies.

PFCs don’t biodegrade, and have been building up in the environment since at least the 1950s. Fish caught in contaminated waters have high levels of pollutants including PFCs; according to the EPA, consumption of contaminated food and drinking water are probably the main ways we’re exposed to the chemicals.

“I don’t feel comfortable with the compounds for myself and my family and would rather eliminate them,” Grandjean told Reuters.

Grandjean and his team took blood samples from 587 pregnant women in the Faroe Islands, near Iceland and Scotland, and tested them for five common PFCs. They repeated the test using blood samples from the children when the kids were 5 years old, after they’d received their diphtheria and tetanus vaccinations, and again after a booster shot at age 7.

“A doubling of PFOS in the mother’s blood resulted in a 39 percent decrease in diphtheria antibody in the child at age five. A doubled PFOA concentration in the child’s blood at age 5 meant a decrease in antibodies at age seven of 36 percent and 25 percent to tetanus and diphtheria respectively,” The Atlantic reported.

(Why women from a remote island in Northern Europe? Because they eat a fish-based diet, and fish and seafood are more likely to have high levels of PFCs. Be careful when you buy fish oils, because many brands have been found to be contaminated. Click on “recipes” at goodandgreen.ca to read more about fish oils and contamination issues.)

If kids aren’t responding to vaccines the way they’re supposed to, then the study’s findings may point to an even bigger issue, Grandjean says: The possibility of an infectious disease epidemic. Antibodies created in response to a vaccine can indicate how well a person’s immune system response in general, so if PFCs have an effect on the way kids’ react to Diphtheria and Tetanus, it could also mean that they’re having problems creating antibodies for other diseases.

Marie Francis, a spokesperson for the American Chemistry Council, a trade association representing chemical manufacturers, said in a statement that the chemical industry is “carefully reviewing” the new study.

“It is important for consumers to know that our companies, working with the EPA, have made marked progress towards advancing new chemistries that are substitutes for the older chemicals evaluated in this study,” Francis said. “These new fluoro chemistries have an improved environmental and toxicological profile while continuing to offer consumer benefits.”

It’s difficult to avoid PFCs entirely, because they’re in so many things, including the containers many processed foods come in and the building materials our houses are made out of. The U.S. government doesn’t require that companies say whether a product contains the chemicals, Grandjean points out, and China, which supplies many of the goods sold in the U.S., doesn’t restrict PFC use at all.

Cold-FX contaminated by E. coli-related bacteria

Posted: Jan 13, 2012 10:22 PM ET (CBC, The Marketplace)
A batch of Cold-FX cold remedy contaminated three years ago by E. coli-related bacteria and sold to the public may still be on store shelves, a CBC Marketplace investigation reveals.

In 2008, a liquid version of Cold-FX was produced. But when the ginseng powder that goes inside the capsules was combined with the sugary syrup ingredient, it multiplied existing bacteria in the COLD FX powder.

Around 375,000 bottles of liquid Cold-FX had to be destroyed, but the company decided that the batches of contaminated powder left over and other batches from that year could be sold.

Marketplace recently found bottles on the shelves that had been manufactured in 2008 when the product was contaminated. The pharmaceutical giant Valeant, which bought out Cold-FX from Afexa Life Sciences in 2011, confirmed to Marketplace in writing that there was contamination of powder back in 2008 but that it was “benign E. hermannii,” a
cousin of E.coli.

The makers of the drug said an “assessment of the risk” was conducted. Valeant says it stands by the safety of the product and even used the powder for a Cold-FX clinical trial on leukemia patients in 2008-2009. Valeant said the principle investigator of those trials, Dr. Kevin High of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Centre in North Carolina, wrote that he didn’t think “any of these cousins of E. coli are likely to cause illness” at the low levels found.

Valeant also said that Health Canada agreed with that assessment. Health Canada told Marketplace that it tested a sampling of the product in 2008 after receiving a complaint from the public.

Health Canada said Cold-FX did not alert them to any problems with the product, but the company did co-operate with Health Canada once contacted. Health Canada said its testing did identify low levels of bacteria in the samples, but the levels were low enough that they did not pose a health risk.

Dr. Lynora Saxinger, an infectious disease expert at the University of Alberta, said while E. hermannii is considered low risk, it could make people with compromised immune systems sick. She said that “finding E. hermannii in a natural product would again suggest that there’s been some exposure of the product to fecal contamination.”

“When people buy a product, I think they should feel assured that there’s not been sewage contamination earlier in the process that got through to that stage,” she added. Health Canada first told Marketplace that the presence of E. hermannii “in a finished natural health product would be unacceptable.”

Marketplace also uncovered that Cold-FX, which is marketed as being “proudly Canadian” is processed in two factories in China. Raw ginseng is turned into Cold-FX powder and then shipped to Canada where the powder is put in gel capsules and bottled. Marketplace obtained an audit that was conducted five years ago on one of the factories.

The audit warned the company not to use the factory. “In general, the facility is quite dirty … The current layout results in crossover of materials leading to greater potential for cross-contamination,” the audit said. It also pointed out “the potential
contamination risks associated with … open windows to the outdoor environment.”
